New Video: Howth – “Grand Marais” + Tour Dates Announced!

With their first U.S. tour approaching fast, Howth has faired a new video for “Grand Marais,” which the good folks at We All Want Someone To Shout For premiered earlier this morning.

Sitting on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, Grand Marais is as much an idealized notion as it is a real place. Minnesota native Carl Creighton has never been to Grand Marais, and he’s also never experienced what it represents in the song he wrote for it. In Howth’s summertime ballad, Grand Marais represents an idealized place and love that singer Carl Creighton has never been to or had. It’s a feeling that we can all relate to. Idealized life. Idealized love. It’s more simply about being single and needing a boy to sit by the lake with. Shot by Michael Pisano on a trip to the Great Lakes, “Grand Marais” perfectly captures the joy and warmth of summer.

Listen: Howth – “Out In Eagan”

The release date for Howth’s sophomore album, Newkirk, is inching closer (May 1st), so the band has offered up “Out In Eagan” as their second single from the record.

Some words about “Out In Eagan” by songwriter Carl Creighton:

An interview for a job you don’t want and, luckily, do not get.
Letting go of the ambitions that might fit others but don’t fit you.
The life that doesn’t want you.
That despises you.
Because you secretly despise it.
And want more.
Than just a job.
With a car.
And a wife.
And a house.
That you can’t afford.
That you’ll have to leave.
Once you’ve introduced your children to the world of debt.

So you quit your job.
And you drive your car.
From the place where you started.
To the place where your meant to be.
And you reach into your chest.
And you feel that empty space.
And you laugh hysterically.
At how absurd the whole thing is.

I can’t even sell my soul, the devil don’t want it.

And there’s nothing sadder than a whore who can’t even sell himself.

Listen: Howth – “Wind Blows Cold”

Howth’s self-titled debut album was a bedroom record with Carl Creighton and Blake Luley acting as the sole members of the band with a few outside contributions. It’s a year later and Howth has expanded to a full quintet. Their sound has also expanded immensely. On their sophomore record, Newkirk, they’ve removed a layer of the hazy reverb to reveal intricate detail and technical prowess. Once again Carl Creighton’s combination songwriter and a powerful voice remain at the center, but it’s now accompanied by a fuller sound.

To showcase Howth’s growth, their first single off of Newkirk is a re-imagined version of “Wind Blows Cold” (which originally appeared on Howth.

If you’d like to pre-order Newkirk, you can do so by donating to their Kickstarter campaign. You’ll also have the chance to receive such cool rewards as tickets to upcoming shows, past records, t-shirts and  even a song written about anything you request.

Howth Announces New Album, Shares “Wind Blows Cold” Single

Howth has a brand new full length coming out on May 1st. Those familiar with the band might recognize the first “Wind Blows Cold” form their debut release, but this version is a reworked version to showcase the growth of the band’s sound.

Howth – “Wind Blows Cold”

At the start of 2011, Howth was a young duo (Carl Creighton and Blake Luley) who had just self-recorded and produced their debut album with the help of a few friends. Their live performance history was limited, especially once Creighton abandoned New York for his native Minnesota. Split between Minnesota and New York, Creighton and Luley never lost focus. DIY publicity efforts led to critical praise and the signing to fresh Brooklyn label startup Mecca Lecca Recording Co.

Back home in Minnesota, Creighton began writing loads of new songs, passing them along to Luley. By the summer of 2011, Carl and Blake had begun developing the framework for their next record. Early recordings were passed back and forth electronically. Blake left the country in the summer and headed to the West Bank to participate in a special music program, where he and Carl continued to work on the first of the songs that would eventually become Newkirk. The duo also began to focus on recruiting a full band, and book their first tour. Upon returning to the U.S., Luley immediately joined up with Creighton in Minnesota, and Howth embarked on a tour as a duo through the Midwest (which also brought Creighton back to New York). With Carl and Blake back together in New York, they began putting together the pieces for a full band. Longtime friends Neil Acharya (bass), Aviva Stampfer (keys, backing vocals), and Miles Waltuck(drums) would all eventually join the band over the next few months, bringing a new excitement and energy to Howth while also solidifying their sound.
